The area encompassed includes the present Buenaventura Reserve (which is set for further expansion), along the "lower road" below Umbrellabird Lodge (down to ca. 500 m), and along the "upper road" toward the town of Sambo Tambo (as high as ca. 1150 m); this latter comprises mainly the former Carrión property, purchased by FJ in 2007. It does not include areas along the road E of the shrine toward Piñas.
Nomenclature follows The Birds of Ecuador , with a few updates. The status terms that have been employed are the usual (common, fairly common, uncommon, rare, and very rare) and refer to abundance levels in the appropriate habitat and elevation range. Refer to The Birds of Ecuador for the latter information, as well as for seasonality summaries for long-distance migrants, etc. Note that certain species are much more easily heard than seen, and that this has been taken into account in determining abundance levels. Note further that many areas the forest is regenerating, and thus in coming years certain bird species will doubtless increase, while others just as surely will decline. A few species - notably the One-colored Becard and Three-banded and Gray-and-gold Warblers - are much more numerous during the dry season (ca. Jul-Dec), and are essentially absent here during the rains. Others - such as the Black-and-white Tanager - occur at Buenaventura rather irregularly, and then only during the Jan-Apr rainy season; they disappear from this area during the rest of the year.
