The area included is primarily along the primary trail (often called the "Inca Ditch," at ca. 3300 m) that proceeds past the reserve entrance station; included are the smaller trails that lead off of it (down to 3200 m or slightly lower). Also included are the grassland and scrubby woodland along the entrance road starting at its cutoff from the road to Nono, and the grassland and Polylepis woodland along the high road (up to 3700 m or more).
