This small and beautiful tanager is found in wet and humid foothill forests in western Colombia and Ecuador. In Ecuador, this bird is found only in the north-west corner of the country in Esmeraldas and the north-west part of Pichincha.
In some areas, it is locally common and is usually seen in foraging in pairs or small groups in the forest canopy. Like many tanagers, it often forages with mixed species flocks.
This species is fairly common in Jocotoco's Canande Reserve .
